Word Meaning
नंग
nang
Meaning
Shame, dishonour, disgrace, or reproach.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Persian and Urdu poetry, 'nang' denotes shame, infamy, or dishonour, often linked with its opposite in the idiom 'naam-o-nang' (fame and shame). In this couplet, it forms part of the izafat compound 'nang-e-wujūd' (the disgrace of existence). The poet laments that his very life was an ignominy and flaw to creation, which only the white shroud of death could adequately conceal.
Etymology
From Persian nang (ننگ), meaning shame, reproach, or dishonour.
Usage
In ghazal tradition, 'nang' is frequently juxtaposed with 'naam' (repute) to signify liberation from societal conventions or to articulate acute existential unworthiness.
