Word Meaning
ना-ख़लफ़
na-khalaf
Meaning
An unworthy, degenerate, or disobedient descendant; an ignoble offspring.
Detailed Meaning
Literally meaning an unworthy successor or disobedient child, it signifies a degenerate heir who tarnishes familial honor. In this couplet, the speaker ironically belittles Majnun as merely an inferior, degenerate offspring of his own illustrious tribe of lovers. By doing so, the poet asserts that his own depth of tragic madness vastly eclipses legendary tradition.
Etymology
Persian negative prefix 'na-' (not, un-) + Arabic 'khalaf' (offspring, dutiful successor).
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, it is employed either literally for a disgrace to lineage or hyperboretically to place legendary figures beneath the poet's own devotion.
Examples
a degenerate heir who dishonored his lineage
dismissed as an unworthy son among peers
