Word Meaning
दौलत
daulat
Meaning
Wealth, riches, fortune, prosperity, or power.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'daulat' typically denotes worldly riches, prosperity, or high station, which are traditionally regarded as transient and spiritually corrupting. In this couplet, it refers specifically to the arrogance and blaze of material fortune ('garmi-e-daulat') destroying a virtuous name. In mystical ghazal contexts, it can also metaphorically represent an invaluable spiritual gift, such as the treasure of love ('daulat-e-ishq').
Etymology
From Arabic 'dawlah' (turn of fortune, rotation, dynasty, reign), which evolved in Persian and Urdu into the primary sense of wealth and riches.
Usage
Often contrasted in the ghazal tradition with 'faqr' (poverty/renunciation) or 'ishq' (divine passion) to highlight the moral hazard of worldly ambition.
Examples
The wealth of love is the true blessing.
Worldly fortune turns like a wheel.
