Word Meaning
दुई
du'ī
Meaning
Duality, separation, otherness, or the state of being two distinct entities.
Detailed Meaning
In mystical and classical Urdu poetry, 'du'i' denotes duality or the illusion of separateness between the Divine and creation. In Ghalib's verse, it reflects the philosophical concept of absolute Oneness (Wahdat al-Wujud), asserting that God is so singular that not even a hint of a second entity exists for Him to be confronted or seen by another. Eliminating this perceived duality is traditionally considered the ultimate goal of the spiritual seeker.
Etymology
Derived from Sanskrit 'dvi' (two), evolving through Prakrit and Old Hindi 'do' with the feminine abstract noun suffix '-ī'.
Usage
Commonly used in Sufi ghazals to signify the illusory divide between lover and Beloved that dissolves in spiritual enlightenment.
Examples
When the veil of duality was lifted, only the One remained.
Erase this sense of duality between you and the Beloved.
