Word Meaning
दुआएँ
du'ā'eñ
Meaning
Prayers, blessings, or entreaties; supplications made to God or pleaded before someone.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'dua' refers to a prayer, supplication, or well-wishing formula. Pluralized here as 'duaen', it denotes the rehearsed words of flattery, blessings, and pleas prepared by the lover. In this couplet, irony is created because the stockpile of flattering prayers meant to charm the beloved was utterly exhausted simply getting past the rude gatekeeper.
Etymology
Arabic root د-ع-و (d-'-w), meaning to call upon, summon, or pray.
Usage
Commonly contrasted with 'bad-dua' (curse) or 'asar' (efficacy), and frequently associated with the helpless lover's hands raised in prayer ('dast-e-dua').
Examples
lab par aati hai dua ban ke tamanna meri
kash meri duaen asar dikhaen
