Word Meaning
थामे
thaame
Meaning
Holds, restrains, checks, or maintains support.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'thāmnā' denotes arresting, checking, or controlling an impulse such as tears, sighs, or speech. In this couplet, 'thāme hai zabāñ' refers to the candle refusing to hold its tongue (its flaming wick), speaking out indiscreetly. Because it does not restrain its tongue, it earns the punishment of being decapitated or snuffed out.
Etymology
Derived from Sanskrit 'स्तम्भ्' (stambh - to stop, prop up, support) through Prakrit 'थंभइ' (thambhaï) into Hindustani.
Usage
Frequently paired with words like 'दामन' (pleading/attachment), 'ज़बाँ' (silence/discretion), or 'अश्क' (emotional restraint) in the ghazal tradition.
Examples
holding onto the beloved's hem
tears that could not be held back
