Meaning
Stopped, ceased, held back, or paused (past participle).
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'thambā' is an archaic/dialectal form of 'thamā', meaning stopped, halted, or restrained. In this couplet, it refers to tears of blood refusing to stop flowing from the lover's weeping eye. The unending flow makes the bleeding eye resemble an incurable, perpetually draining sore.
Etymology
Sanskrit स्तम्भ (stambha) -> Prakrit थंभ (thambha) -> Hindavi/Urdu थंबना / تھنبنا (to stop, to halt).
Usage
Common in early and classical Rekhta poetry (such as Mir's era) where vernacular verb forms with nasalization were standardly used before being replaced by standard 'thamnā'.
