Word Meaning
ता'नों
ta'noñ
Meaning
Taunts, reproaches, sarcastic remarks, or gibes.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetics, 'ta'non' (plural oblique of ta'na) signifies biting reproaches, accusations, or satirical taunts hurled at an uncaring beloved or by mocking rivals. In this couplet, Ghalib chides himself for thinking that sarcastic reprimands and calling the beloved heartless could ever soften their demeanor or elicit affection. It underscores the psychological futility and desperation of an aggrieved lover's complaints.
Etymology
Arabic طَعْن (ṭa‘n), literally meaning to prick, pierce with a spear, or revile/disparage.
Usage
A recurrent motif in the ghazal, denoting either the lover's bitter rebuke of the beloved or the societal mockery (ta'na-e-aghyār) endured by the lover.
Examples
