Word Meaning
तिधर
tidhar
Meaning
there, thither, in that direction (correlative paired with 'jidhar')
Detailed Meaning
An archaic or dialectal correlative adverb in classical Hindustani meaning 'there' or 'in that direction'. In this couplet, it serves as the grammatical correlative to 'jidhar' (wherever), asserting that wherever the speaker looked, in that very place only the divine or beloved face was present. In modern standard Urdu and Hindi, it has largely been replaced by 'udhar'.
Etymology
From Middle Indo-Aryan/Prakrit sources derived from Sanskrit 'ततः' (tataḥ), formed on the demonstrative pronominal base 'त-'.
Usage
Frequent in early classical Urdu and Dakkani poetry to mirror 'jidhar' rhythmically and phonetically, though largely replaced by 'udhar' in later standard idiom.
