Word Meaning
टाल
ṭāl
Meaning
To push aside, remove, avert, or deflect.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu and Hindustani poetry, 'टाल' (stem of 'टालना') signifies pushing aside, dislodging, or averting an obstacle or event. In this couplet, it describes the physical act of moving or displacing Mount Bisutun from the path of the mountain-hewer (Farhad). It highlights the irony that while an entire mountain might be cast aside, the insurmountable burden of love remains immovable.
Etymology
Derived from Sanskrit 'तल्' (tal) / Indo-Aryan vernacular root evolving into Hindustani 'ṭālnā'.
Usage
In ghazal poetry, it is employed both concretely for pushing away physical barriers and abstractly for averting impending doom or death.
Examples
Even if you push aside mountains, fate remains immovable.
He brushed aside the sorrow of his heart with a smile.
