Meaning

Vicinity, neighborhood, proximity, or surrounding region.

Detailed Meaning

In classical Urdu and Persian poetry, 'jawaar' denotes proximity, contiguous space, or neighborhood, most famously encountered in the compound 'qurb-o-jawaar' (vicinity). In the quoted couplet, it describes the chest lying in direct physical and metaphorical closeness to the collar ('garebaan'), the traditional site of frenzied tearing. The poet cautions that swift nails clawing at the collar might wound the chest residing right beside it.

In ghazal diction, it is predominantly employed in the Persian hendiadys 'qurb-o-jawaar' to depict physical intimacy or the nearby environment.
