Word Meaning
जिब्रील
Jibrīl
hinoun
Meaning
Archangel Gabriel, the messenger angel who delivered divine revelations to prophets.
Detailed Meaning
In Islamic theology and classical Urdu poetry, Jibril (Gabriel) is the archangel of divine revelation and the pinnacle of celestial intellect. In this couplet by Iqbal, a selfhood (khudi) fortified by sacred knowledge reaches such immense heights that it becomes an object of envy for Gabriel himself. Thus, the figure of Jibril denotes the boundary of pure intellect and angelic proximity to the Divine.
Etymology
Arabic, borrowed from Hebrew Gavrī'ēl ('God is my strength').
Usage
Frequently used in classical ghazal and modern nazm as the archetype of supreme angelic intellect, revelation, and closeness to the Divine.
