Word Meaning
जिन्नों
jinnoñ
Meaning
Those who; whoever (archaic plural relative pronoun).
Detailed Meaning
In classical Rekhta poetry, 'jinnoñ' is an archaic oblique plural form of the relative pronoun 'jo' (who/whoever), equivalent to modern 'jinhoñ ne'. In this couplet by Mir Taqi Mir, it refers to those who broke or demolished the lover's heart, bringing ruin upon themselves. It is often mistranslated as 'jinn' (spirits) or 'junūn' (madness) due to identical Persian-script orthography.
Etymology
Derived from Old Hindi / Prakrit relative base 'ja' (जो) with the archaic plural oblique case-ending '-oñ'.
Usage
Common in early and classical Rekhta (such as Mir and Sauda) before standardizing into modern 'jinhoñ'.
