In Urdu poetics, 'zikr' refers to the act of speaking of, remembering, or praising the beloved or the Divine. In this couplet, 'dam-e-zikr' indicates the precise moment love is recited or discussed, which ought to evoke overwhelming physical and emotional anguish. Without such intensity, the poet considers the mention of love to be nothing more than empty story-telling.
