hinoun

Meaning

Act of serving as a collar; tearing of the collar in frenzy.

Detailed Meaning

In classical Urdu poetry, 'girebānī' refers to the state or act of functioning as a collar, especially one torn apart in frantic love or despair. In this couplet, because the lover is already naked (uryān), the wound of the heart itself takes on the role of a collar to be split wide like the break of dawn. It represents the perpetual urge of madness to rend garments even when none remain.

Etymology

Persian (girībān / girēbān + noun suffix -ī).

Usage

A poetic trope closely linked to 'chāk-e-girebān', symbolizing uncontrollable ecstasy, madness, and desolation in the ghazal tradition.

Examples

The frenzy of passion made the wound tear like a collar.

No garment was spared in the ecstasy of collar-rending.
