Literally, 'girdāb' denotes a whirlpool or vortex that threatens to drown whatever enters it. Metaphorically, Urdu poets use it to symbolize extreme helplessness, calamity, or an engulfing ocean of grief. In this couplet, incessant weeping has so altered the appearance of the lover's tear-filled eyes that they now resemble swirling whirlpools in water.

Persian (گرداب), a compound of 'gird' (round/circling) and 'āb' (water).
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, it frequently appears paired with images of a frail boat (safīnah) to depict inescapable tragedy or the lover's despair.
