Word Meaning
ख़ुसरव
Khusrav
Meaning
A monarch; specifically the legendary poet Amir Khusrau, master of verse.
Detailed Meaning
In Persian, 'Khusrav' originally denotes a grand monarch or emperor, historically associated with ancient Sasanian rulers. In classical Urdu poetry, and specifically in this couplet by Ghalib, it serves as an allusion to Hazrat Amir Khusrau, celebrated for his sweetness of speech ('sheereen-sukhan'). Ghalib reverently declares that the charm of his own poetry stems from drinking the water washed over Khusrau's feet.
Etymology
Persian (خسرو / Khusraw), derived from Avestan 'Haosravah' (possessing good fame or renowned).
Usage
Used in Urdu ghazals both as a symbol of royal majesty and as an allusion (talmeeh) to either Amir Khusrau or the legendary king in the romance of Shirin and Farhad.
Examples
Neither the crown of Khusrav nor the throne of Jamshid endured.
The melodic verses of Khusrav still enchant every poetic assembly.
