Word Meaning
ख़िदमत
khidmat
Meaning
Service, duty, attendance, devotion, or assigned task.
Detailed Meaning
In classical poetry, 'khidmat' denotes humble service, loyal attendance, or an assigned duty. In this couplet, it ironises the poet's designated function; while trapped in the cage, his sole office or duty is lamentation (nālagī), just as in the garden he held the position of an elegist. It frames the suffering of captivity as an official role.
Etymology
Arabic (root kh-d-m, meaning to serve or attend upon), entering Urdu through Persian.
Usage
Commonly employed in the ghazal to denote devotion to the beloved or spiritual guide, as well as ironically for an imposed trial or sorrow.
Examples
Spending a lifetime in the service of the beloved's street.
Lamentation remained the only duty left for the captive bird.
