Word Meaning
ख़त्ती
khattī
Meaning
Pertaining to Khatt; specifically denoting fine spears crafted in al-Khatt.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Arabic and Persian-influenced poetry, 'khatti' denotes a superior lance crafted in 'al-Khatt', an Arabian coastal area famed for spear shafts. In this couplet, 'neza-e-khatti' serves a double purpose, evoking both deadly spears piercing the chest and a pun on 'khatt' (writing) upon the 'lauh' (tablet) of the chest. It thus conveys that the lover's heart has been completely battered and exhausted by relentless blows.
Etymology
Arabic, from the nisba of 'al-Khatt' (الخط), an ancient coastal region in Eastern Arabia famous for weapon craftsmanship.
Usage
Almost exclusively found in the izafat compound 'neza-e-khatti', where classical poets frequently exploit a pun on 'khatt' meaning line, script, or facial down.
