Word Meaning
खिंच
khinch
Meaning
To be drawn, pulled, uttered, or sustained (as a sigh or lament).
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'khinchna' frequently conveys the drawing out or voicing of a deep sigh (aah) or lament (naala). In Ghalib's verse, it describes unvoiced plaints assigned in the realm of non-existence that could not even be drawn out or articulated there, subsequently turning into fragile breaths in this world. It evokes both the physical tension of pulling and the vocal exertion of a groan.
Etymology
Derived from Sanskrit 'kṛṣ' (to draw, pull) through Prakrit, giving Hindi-Urdu 'khīñcnā' and its intransitive/passive stem 'khinchnā'.
Usage
Conventionally paired with nouns of grief like 'aah' (sigh) or 'naala' (wail) to portray prolonged agony.
Examples
A deep, heavy sigh was drawn from the restless heart.
Not a single lament could be drawn in the presence of the beloved.
