Word Meaning
कसरत
kasrat
Meaning
Abundance, multitude, profusion, or a large crowd.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'kasrat' refers to abundance, excess, or a huge multitude. In this couplet, it describes the overwhelming crowd and heavy rush of mourners gathered around Mir's bier, which caused such commotion that finding time for the funeral prayer became impossible. It stands in contrast to the physical exercise meaning derived later in common Hindustani parlance.
Etymology
Arabic root k-th-r (ک-ث-ر), from 'kathrah' (کَثْرَة), meaning abundance, multiplicity, or multitude.
Usage
In poetry, it is frequently used to describe an overwhelming flood of tears or sighs, and philosophically as the plural multiplicity of the material world set against 'wahdat' (unity).
Examples
a multitude of tears
the overwhelming crowd of lovers
