Kaleem

hiproper noun

Meaning

Interlocutor; epithet of Prophet Moses, who spoke directly with God.

Detailed Meaning

Literally meaning an interlocutor or conversationalist, 'Kaleem' is the Islamic epithet for the Prophet Moses (Kalimullah, 'the one who spoke with God'). In classical poetry, it is standardly used as an allusion (talmih) to Moses witnessing the divine light on Mount Sinai (Koh-e-Tur). In this couplet, the poet apostrophizes Moses, boasting that the fire of their own heart was restrained, otherwise just one spark would have reduced a hundred Mount Sinais to ashes.

Etymology

Arabic, derived from the root k-l-m ('to speak'; fa'īl pattern), meaning 'interlocutor' or 'speaker'.

Usage

In the Urdu ghazal tradition, 'Kaleem' serves as a classic allusion (talmīḥ) to Moses in contrast to the mystic lover who dares to experience divine love.

Examples

O Kaleem, the splendor on the mountain was merely a glimpse.

The heart's intense longing surpasses even what Kaleem witnessed.
