Word Meaning
करीम
karīm
hiadjective
Meaning
Generous, bountiful, benevolent, or noble.
Detailed Meaning
In Urdu poetry, 'karīm' denotes an exceptionally generous or gracious being, frequently used as one of the divine attributes of God. In this couplet, Iqbal ironically uses it self-referentially to describe himself as generous despite his destitute state ('be-nawā'). His generosity, however, consists not of worldly wealth but of bestowals of poetic passion and fiery embers.
Etymology
Arabic: from the root k-r-m (ك-ر-م), relating to generosity, honor, and nobility.
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, 'karīm' often evokes the boundless divine mercy of God contrasted with human frailty and sin.
