Word Meaning
करिए
kariye
Meaning
To do, should one do, or may one do; polite precative verb form.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu and Rekhta poetry, 'kariye' serves as an archaic precative or optative verbal form corresponding to modern 'kījiye' or the passive construction 'kiyā jāye' (one ought to do / how could one do). In this couplet, 'naql kariye' expresses a rhetorical query about how one could possibly imitate or rival the beauty of the beloved's mouth. It gently chides the budding flower for daring to compare its scent and form to the beloved.
Etymology
Sanskrit root 'kṛ' (कृ, to do) evolved through Prakrit 'kariai' into Braj Bhasha and Old Hindustani/Urdu precative forms ending in '-iye'.
Usage
A characteristic feature of classical ghazal diction, often deployed rhetorically at the end of a line to pose an impossible question or convey polite counsel.
