Word Meaning
कुर्ता
kurta
Meaning
A loose collarless shirt; tunic worn over the upper body.
Detailed Meaning
A traditional loose tunic or upper garment common in South Asian attire. In this couplet, it represents one of the pious Shaikh's personal religious robes and garments, which he recklessly gave away in intoxicated ecstasy at the tavern. Together with the jubbah and khirqa, it symbolizes outer modesty cast aside in spiritual or drunken abandon.
Etymology
Derived from Persian 'kurtah' (کوته/کرته), denoting a short coat or shirt.
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, garments like the kurta or pairahan often appear in motifs of madness (junoon) where the lover tears them, or in satires where the hypocritical ascetic discards them in intoxication.
Examples
Tore his kurta in sudden frenzy
Gave away his kurta in intoxication
