क़िबले

qible

hinoun

Meaning

Direction faced during prayer (Kaaba); oblique form of Qibla.

Detailed Meaning

In Islamic terminology, the Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, toward which worshipers turn in prayer. In Urdu poetry, it frequently symbolizes the external or conventional focus of adoration and ritual piety. In this couplet, Ghalib suggests that the physical sanctuary is not the true object of worship itself, but merely a directional pointer guiding the enlightened toward the transcendent Divine.

Etymology

Arabic, from the root q-b-l (ق-ب-ل), meaning 'to face', 'to confront', or 'to be opposite'.

Usage

In the ghazal tradition, the Qibla is often juxtaposed against the beloved or an inner spiritual truth to critique superficial orthodoxy.

Examples

Turning towards the Qibla in deep reverence

The role of the Qibla as a guide for seekers
