Word Meaning
काबा
Ka'ba
Meaning
The sacred shrine in Mecca; the holiest sanctuary of Islam.
Detailed Meaning
The Kaaba is the cubic sanctuary at the center of the Grand Mosque in Mecca towards which Muslims pray. In classical Urdu poetry, it frequently symbolizes the pinnacle of orthodox religious piety and formal ritual. In this couplet, it is juxtaposed against the lover's street, showing that for true lovers, devotion to the beloved completely eclipses formal pilgrimage and sacred sites.
Etymology
Arabic (كعبة / ka'bah), meaning 'cube' or 'cubic structure', derived from the root k-'-b (ك-ع-ب).
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, Kaaba is commonly juxtaposed with the tavern (maikhana) or the idol-temple (dair) to contrast orthodox dogma with genuine, self-transcending love.
Examples
turning one's face away from the Kaaba
from the Kaaba to the beloved's threshold
