Word Meaning
क़ुदसियों
qudsiyoñ
Meaning
Angels, celestial beings, or pure dwellers of heaven.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'qudsi' refers to angels or sacred beings belonging to the celestial realm (Aalam-e-Quds). In this couplet, it designates angels who, despite their sinless nature, lack the intense longing and fiery courage found in humans. The poet highlights that the arduous station of love ('maqām-e-shauq') can only be conquered by daring human souls, not by passive celestial creatures.
Etymology
Derived from the Arabic root q-d-s (قدس), denoting holiness or sanctity, adapted into Persian and Urdu as 'qudsī' (angelic/holy) with the Urdu oblique plural suffix '-oñ'.
Usage
In Urdu ghazal and nazm, 'qudsi' is often invoked in contrast with mankind to affirm the superior passion and existential struggle of humans over purely obedient celestial beings.
Examples
The assembly of angels remains unaware of this mortal yearning.
Celestial beings marvel at the audacity of earthly lovers.
