Word Meaning
एहराम
ihrām
Meaning
Sacred pilgrim garb; the state of ritual consecration for pilgrimage.
Detailed Meaning
In Islamic terminology, ihrām refers both to the sacred spiritual state assumed during Hajj or Umrah and to the unstitched white garment worn by pilgrims. In this couplet, it signifies external piety and outward religious observance, which the poet contrasts with authentic spiritual initiation. Though the ascetic is clad in the holy garb within the sacred precinct (Haram), he remains inwardly a stranger (nā-mahram) to divine truth.
Etymology
Arabic (إِحْرَام), verbal noun of Form IV from the root ḥ-r-m (ح-ر-م), meaning 'to make forbidden' or 'to enter a sacred state'.
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, ihrām is commonly contrasted with the tavern or lover's attire to satirize mere outward ritualism devoid of inner love.
