Word Meaning
इशरत
ishrat
Meaning
Joy, pleasure, delight, or supreme bliss.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetics, 'ishrat' signifies delight, pleasure, or ecstatic enjoyment, often set in contrast to sorrow. In this couplet, it represents the ultimate spiritual and existential bliss of an individual drop (qatra) fulfilling its destiny by dissolving into the vast ocean (dariya). It conveys how true fulfillment is paradoxically attained through total surrender and self-effacement.
Etymology
Arabic root 'ع-ش-ر' (associating, conviviality), evolving into 'ishrah/'ishrat denoting delight, enjoyment, and merry company.
Usage
Commonly paired with 'gham' (sorrow) as an antithesis, but in mystical poetry, it frequently denotes transcendent joy born out of suffering or annihilation.
Examples
Memory of past bliss and youth.
The delight of sighting the beloved.
