In Arabic and Islamic philosophy, 'ilah' denotes any entity or deity that is worshiped. In this couplet by Iqbal, it occurs as part of the creed 'La Ilaha Illallah' (There is no god but Allah). The poet laments that pedantic institutional schooling has stifled the genuine, passionate cry of faith.
