hinoun (proper)
Meaning
Azrael, the archangel who takes life; personification of death.
Detailed Meaning
In Islamic theology, Izrā'īl (Azrael) is the archangel of death appointed to extract the souls of the dying. In classical Urdu ghazal, poets often metaphorically invoke Izrā'īl to describe the lethal beauty, indifference, or wrath of the beloved. In this couplet, the beloved, who was expected to be life itself ('jān-e-mujassam'), ironically acts as the angel of death to the lover.
Etymology
Arabic (عزرائيل), ultimately of Semitic/Hebrew origin (Azriel/Ezra).
Usage
Frequently used in the ghazal as a hyperbole for the beloved whose glance or separation brings instantaneous death to the lover.
