In classical Urdu poetry, 'āsmān' refers literally to the sky and symbolically to fate, destiny, or the oppressive world that torments the lover. In Mir's couplet, it represents the cosmic order and destiny with which the perpetually aggrieved lover is at war. Paired with 'zamīñ' (earth), it illustrates total conflict and estrangement from the entire universe.
