आसूदगी
āsūdagī
Meaning
Peace, tranquility, contentment, ease, or freedom from distress.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'āsūdagī' refers to a state of inner tranquility, comfort, and respite from grief or worldly turbulence. In this couplet by Mir Taqi Mir, the poet laments that upon entering this earthly existence ('hastī'), he never experienced true peace, wishing he had remained asleep in non-existence ('‘adam'). It encapsulates the ultimate spiritual and emotional rest unattainable in mortal life.
Etymology
Persian: derived from the stem 'āsūdan' (آسودن - to rest, to be calm) with the abstract noun suffix '-gī'.
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, 'āsūdagī' frequently contrasts with 'iztirāb' (restlessness) or 'hastī' (worldly existence), which is viewed as inherently troubled.
Examples
Not a single moment of ease was found in life.
