Word Meaning
आराम
ārām
Meaning
Rest, ease, comfort, tranquility, or peace.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetics, 'ārām' denotes rest, serenity, or relief from pain and agitation. In this couplet, it carries a bitter irony: the speaker notes that his death has finally granted peace and ease to the tormentors (ahl-e-jafā), who no longer need exert the effort to torment him. It highlights how the lover's existence was deemed an annoying tribulation even by his oppressors.
Etymology
Persian (آرام / ārām), from Middle Persian ārām, derived from Proto-Iranian *rāma- (peace, joy, rest).
Usage
Often used with sharp irony to contrast the lover's ceaseless agony with the untroubled comfort of the indifferent beloved or the cruel world.
Examples
The wounded heart finds no rest anywhere.
Ease was attained only after turning into dust.
