Word Meaning
आरिफ़
‘Ārif
Meaning
A mystic, gnostic, or one possessing profound spiritual wisdom.
Detailed Meaning
In Islamic mysticism and classical Urdu poetry, an 'arif' is a gnostic or knower of divine truth through direct spiritual realization (ma'rifat). In this couplet, it refers to the ideal seeker who remains perpetually intoxicated with the wine of the Divine Essence (zat) rather than merely observing the external attributes. Such a person transcends formal theological dogma to achieve experiential union with ultimate reality.
Etymology
Arabic (عارف), active participle of the root 'a-r-f' (ع-ر-ف), meaning to know, recognize, or perceive intuitively.
Usage
In ghazal poetry, the 'arif' is often contrasted with the dry, ritualistic 'zahid' (ascetic) as an embodiment of genuine divine love and spiritual insight.
Examples
The mystic's gaze looks beyond outward appearance into inner truth.
Every true knower of God is privy to the secrets of reality.
