Word Meaning
अरक़
'araq
Meaning
Sweat, perspiration; distillate, essence, or juice.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu and Persian poetry, 'araq primarily refers to sweat as well as distilled liquor or essence. In this couplet, it evokes the sweat of embarrassment and shame (araq-e-sharm), where the brilliant sun is described as sinking and drowning in its own sweat out of humility before the luminous beloved. It creates an exquisite poetic contrast between intoxicating wine and the perspiration of modest bashfulness.
Etymology
Arabic origin from the root 'a-r-q (ع-ر-ق), meaning perspiration, exuded juice, or distillate.
Usage
In ghazal tradition, 'araq is conventionally used as a metaphor for pearl-like drops of sweat on the beloved's cheek caused by heat, intoxication, or bashfulness.
Examples
Beads of sweat shone like pearls upon the blushing cheek.
The celestial sun drowned in the sweat of modest shame.
