Although, even though, though.

Detailed Meaning

A concessive conjunction borrowed from Persian meaning 'although' or 'even if'. It sets up an antithesis resolved in the second hemistich with 'wale' (but).

Etymology

Persian اگرچہ (agar-che), a compound of 'agar' (if) and 'che' (what/which).

Usage

In classical ghazal, it typically opens the first misra to concede a reality, paired with words like 'wale' or 'lekin' in the second.
