मन पछितैहै अवसर बीते

The verses

1. मन पछितैहै अवसर बीते । दुर्लभ देह पाइ हरिपद भजु करम बचन अरु ही ते ॥

   Meaning: The mind shall grieve once this fleeting chance is gone; having won this rare human form, revere the Lord's feet through deed, word, and heart alone.

2. सहसबाहु दसंबदन आदि नृप बचे न काल बली ते । हम हम करि धन धाम सँवारे, अंत चले उठि रीते ॥

   Meaning: Mighty sovereigns like Sahasrabahu and ten-headed Ravana escaped not all-powerful Death; with vain pride we amassed wealth and built estates, only to depart in the end empty-handed.

3. सुत बनितादि जानि स्वारथ-रत न करु नेह सबही तें । अंतहुँ तोहिं तजेंगे, पामर ! तू न तजै अबही तें ॥

   Meaning: Know son, wife, and kin as bound by selfish ends; bestow not your love on them all. In the end they shall forsake you, O wretched fool, why do you not renounce them even now?

4. अब नाथहिं अनुरागु जागु जड़ त्यागु दुरासा जी तें । बुझै न काम-अगिनि तुलसी कहुँ विषय-भोग बहु घी तें ॥

   Meaning: Awaken now, dull soul, love the Lord, and cast false hopes from your heart; can the fire of desire ever be quenched, O Tulsi, by pouring the fuel of worldly pleasures?
