Ghazal

You Are Merciful, I Am Lowly; You Are the Giver, I Am the Beggar

Tulsidas· Pad· 4 shers

In this devotional verse, the seeker surrenders entirely to the Divine with profound humility and earnest faith. Contrasting God's boundless mercy with their own helplessness and flaws, the devotee pleads for salvation and unconditional grace.

1
तू दयालु, दीन हौं, तू दानि, हौं भिखारी । हौं प्रसिद्ध पातकी, तू पापपुंज-हारी ॥
You are full of mercy, and I am destitute; You are the gracious giver, and I the beggar pleading. I am a sinner renowned across the world, while You are the redeemer who sweeps away all sins exceeding.
You are merciful and I am humble and destitute; You are the generous giver and I am a beggar. I am a well-known sinner, and You are the one who destroys the vast heap of all sins.
2
नाथ तू अनाथ को, अनाथ कौन मोसो ? मो समान आरत नहिं, आरतिहर तोसो ॥
O Lord, You are the guardian of the helpless, and who is more helpless than I? No one is afflicted by sorrow like me, and none dispels all distress like You.
O Lord, You are the protector of the helpless, and who could be more helpless than me? There is none as afflicted by grief as I am, and none who removes distress like You.
3
ब्रह्म तू, हौं जीव, तुही ठाकुर, हौं चेरो । तात,मात,गुरु,सखा तू सब बिधि हितु मेरो॥
You are the Supreme Divine, I the mortal soul; You the Master, I Your servant true. Father, mother, teacher, and companion—in every way my well-wisher are You.
You are the Supreme Being and I am the mortal soul; You are the Master and I am Your servant. You are my father, mother, teacher, and friend, and in every way my true well-wisher.
4
तोहिं मोहिं नाते अनेक मानिये जो भावै । ज्यों त्यों तुलसी कृपालु ! चरन-सरन पावै ॥
Between You and me lie countless ties, accept whichever pleases Thee; by any means, O Merciful Lord, may Tulsi find refuge at Thy feet.
Between You and me there are countless relationships, accept whichever You please; O Merciful Lord, somehow or the other, may Tulsi find shelter at Your feet.
