Ghazal
This ghazal is a satirical and self-deprecating piece where the poet 'Mir' comments on his own life and artistic state. He suggests that he is content being a simple, ordinary person (zindiq) and that it is better for him to remain silent rather than perform or display his art in a gathering. Overall, it is a thoughtful commentary on the complexities of human emotion and the fleeting nature of art.

Now Mir Sahib has become a poor man indeed,
Adorning his forehead with gold-threaded tinsel.
Now Mir Sahib has become a poor man indeed, adorning his forehead with gold-threaded tinsel.

Our heart of love is better left silent,
Our heart of love is better left silent, because if someone attempts to speak in the gathering, everyone will start crying.

How long shall I roam, oh, if only you would come,
And sit like a maiden of the desert winds, my beloved.
The couplet means that the speaker wonders how long he must roam, and wishes that his beloved would arrive and sit like a maiden of the desert winds.

The sword-edge of his own will lies upon his chest,
Where the black-mark of death has formed a pattern of art.
The sword-edge of his own will lies upon his chest, where the black mark of death has formed a pattern of art.

The thoughts of a letter, those things are nothing to us,
We often sit immersed, as if drinking vegetable soup.
The thoughts of a letter from that person are nothing to us; we often remain immersed, as if drinking vegetable soup.

The sword of cruelty, from now on, will walk every moment with her;
With our own heads, we have tied the shroud.
The sword of cruelty, from now on, will walk every moment with her; with our own heads, we have tied the shroud.

If you are ready, do not let me wander here and there,
For we, your helpless ones, have observed your behavior.
If you are ready, do not let me wander here and there, for we, your helpless ones, have observed your behavior.
