In the holy shrine I heard Your name, in the temple saw Your trace; in short, wherever I cast my gaze, I saw none other than Your face.
I heard Your name in the sacred sanctuary and saw Your trace in the idol-temple; in short, wherever I looked, I saw none other than You.

Where is the leisure to speak at length? Let this suffice, O gracious friend: Whatever you chose to show to me, I looked upon until the end.
Where is the leisure to say much? Let it suffice that whatever you showed us, O gracious friend, we simply saw it.

All eighteen thousand worlds are but a mirror of His grace; / What can I say of where, through me, He gazed into this space?
The entire universe of eighteen thousand worlds is His mirror; what can I say about where and how He looked through me.

I warned you not to fix your gaze upon those intoxicating eyes; did not oblivion claim you in the end, O fellow drinkers, see?
I warned you not to fix your gaze upon those eyes; see, O drinkers, didn't that oblivion and intoxication overcome you in the end?

Nothing in all this world was found more precious than love, though a thousand times over I put it to the test.
I tested it a thousand times, but found nothing in this world better than love.
