Ghazal
Qayamat Hai Ki Sun Laila Ka Dasht-e-qais Men Aana
क़यामत है कि सुन लैला का दश्त-ए-क़ैस में आना
In this ghazal, Ghalib subtly reflects on the beloved's naive detachment and skepticism toward passionate devotion, reacting with disbelief even to legendary tales of sacrifice like Laila seeking Qais. With characteristic wit and melancholy, the poet cautions against testing the delicate heart through the harsh trials of love.

It is astonishing that upon hearing of Layla's arrival in Qais's (Majnun's) desert, he asked in sheer disbelief, 'Does such a thing even happen in this world?'

I feel pity, O Ghalib, on that delicate heart of hers; do not spur that cruel infidel to put love to the test.
