Ghazal
This ghazal captures the poet's overwhelming anticipation and disbelief at the beloved's arrival. The presence of the loved one is so powerful and elusive that it feels like lightning, flame, and mercury, almost defying comprehension even in moments of life-and-death struggle. The poet's profound love is conveyed through vivid imagery of an awaited, yet almost ungraspable, beloved.

You all just say that the musk-scented idol has arrived;Just once, let someone exclaim in a fright, 'Oh, they've come!'
You all merely state that the musk-scented beloved has arrived. I wish someone would exclaim just once, in a startled manner, 'Oh, they've come!'

In death's great struggle, yes, by love's strong pull,I cannot speak, but they arrived, their concern full.
I am in the throes of death, yes, due to love's pull. I cannot say anything, yet they came to inquire about me.

It's a world of lightning, flame, and mercury's restless state,Though it may come, it never truly enters my understanding.
It is a state characterized by lightning, flame, and the restlessness of mercury. Though it may appear, it never truly comes into my understanding.
4
It's clear that Nakeerain won't flee in fear, it's true,But what if the scent of last night's wine comes from my mouth to you?
It's clear that the angels Nakeerain won't flee in fear, but the speaker wonders what if the scent of last night's wine comes from their mouth.
5
Neither do we fear the executioner, nor quarrel with the preacher,We have understood Him, in whatever guise He may appear.
We neither fear the executioner nor argue with the preacher, because we have understood the ultimate truth, recognizing it no matter what form or guise it takes.
6
Yes, O seekers, who would heed the taunts of unfulfillment? Finding him unattainable, we lost our very selves.
Yes, O seekers, who would heed the taunts of unfulfillment? Upon realizing that the beloved is unattainable, we ended up losing our own selves.
7
It's not our way to sit in comfort's sway,If at that door no entry, to Kaaba we'll make our way.
It is not our custom to sit idly in comfort. If there is no access at that specific door, then we will make our way to the Kaaba.
8
My companions spoke, swayed by my weeping's deep plea,You stayed aloof, unharmed by all you could see,But by your coming, you came and drowned me.
My companions spoke, moved by the effect of my weeping. You remained untouched by it, but came and caused my downfall.
9
Oh Ghalib, what to say of that assembly of charm! We too went there, and wept for your fate.
Oh Ghalib, what can be said about that enchanting gathering! We too went there and wept for your fate.
