Ranj Ki Jab Guftugu Hone Lagi
रंज की जब गुफ़्तुगू होने लगी

रंज की जब गुफ़्तुगू होने लगी
आप से तुम तुम से तू होने लगी
When grievances began to find their voice anew, polite 'You' turned to familiar, and familiar shrank to 'thou'.
When the conversation turned to grievances and resentment, the manner of address degraded from the respectful 'aap' to the informal 'tum', and ultimately to the blunt 'tu'.

चाहिए पैग़ाम-बर दोनों तरफ़
लुत्फ़ क्या जब दू-ब-दू होने लगी
A messenger is needed on either side; where is the charm once lovers speak face to face?
There ought to be a messenger on both sides to carry messages; what pleasure remains once conversations begin to happen face-to-face?

मेरी रुस्वाई की नौबत आ गई
उन की शोहरत कू-ब-कू होने लगी
The hour has come of my disgrace and shame, while street by street now echoes with her fame.
The moment has arrived for my disgrace and humiliation, while their fame has begun to spread from street to street.

है तिरी तस्वीर कितनी बे-हिजाब
हर किसी के रू-ब-रू होने लगी
How utterly unveiled has your portrait now become, / Coming face-to-face with just about anyone.
Your portrait has become so unveiled that it has now begun to come face-to-face with everyone.

ग़ैर के होते भला ऐ शाम-ए-वस्ल
क्यूँ हमारे रू-ब-रू होने लगी
With the rival lingering there, O night of union, why have you come to present yourself before my eyes?
O night of union, why are you appearing before me when the rival is already present?

ना-उम्मीदी बढ़ गई है इस क़दर
आरज़ू की आरज़ू होने लगी
Hopelessness has grown to such an extent / That now I yearn merely to have a desire.

अब के मिल कर देखिए क्या रंग हो
फिर हमारी जुस्तुजू होने लगी

'दाग़' इतराए हुए फिरते हैं आज
शायद उन की आबरू होने लगी
Dāgh walks about puffed up with pride today;
Perhaps at last some honor has come his way.
