Turn not your gaze away, spinning excuses, while ignoring my forlorn state; / For I have no strength left to endure this parting, beloved, why not hold me to your chest?
Do not ignore my miserable state by turning your eyes away and making up excuses; for I have no endurance left to bear this separation, O beloved, why do you not hold me close to your chest?

The nights of parting stretch as long as tresses, while the day of union is as fleeting as life; O dear friend, if I behold not my beloved, how shall I endure these dark and lonely nights?
The nights of separation are as long as tresses and the day of union is as brief as life. O friend, if I do not see my beloved, how will I pass these dark nights?

All at once, those two bewitching eyes with a hundred deceptions robbed my heart of peace; who now cares enough to go and carry the tale of my longing to my beloved?
All of a sudden, those two bewitching eyes robbed my heart of peace through a hundred deceptions. Now, who cares enough to go and convey my words and plight to my beloved?

Like a burning candle, a bewildered speck lost at last in the radiant love of that moon; No sleep visits my eyes, no rest soothes my body, neither does my beloved come, nor send a letter.
In the love of that moon-like beloved, I have finally become like a burning candle and a bewildered speck of dust. There is neither sleep in my eyes nor rest in my body, yet the beloved neither comes nor sends any letter.

By that radiant moon who deceived Khusrau on Judgment Day, I swear: I would conceal it deep within my faithful heart, could I but find a letter from my beloved.
I swear by that moon-like beloved who deceived Khusrau on the Day of Judgment: if I ever manage to receive a letter from my beloved, I will conceal it deep within my pure heart.
