Ghazal
This ghazal is a plea to the awaited truth (haqeeqat-e-muntazar) to appear from its veil of metaphor (majaz). The speaker expresses that her forehead, filled with devotion and yearning (sajde), desperately awaits the truth to manifest clearly, not just in symbols. It is an urgent call for things hidden behind the curtain (parda) to emerge and bring music and clarity into life.

Oh, if the truth I long for could appear in a guise, a mere illusion,
For countless prostrations are yearning in the plea of my life.
Oh, if the longed-for truth could ever appear in a guise or illusion, know that countless prostrations are yearning within the plea of my life.

O awaited truth, reveal yourself from the veil of metaphor,
For thousands of salutations yearn upon my devoted brow.
O awaited truth, please reveal yourself from the veil of metaphor, for my devoted brow yearns to offer thousands of salutations.

Oh, be a companion of sorrow, you are the intimate of my heart; / Tell me, what is that melody hidden in the silence of the curtained instrument?
Oh, be a companion of sorrow, you are the intimate of my heart; tell me, what is that melody hidden in the silence of the curtained instrument?

Give enthusiasm to the zeal, you are the sound that expands recognition through the ears;
What use is that instrument, which remains hidden silently behind the curtain?
You are the sound that gives enthusiasm and expands recognition through the ears. What use is an instrument that remains hidden silently behind the curtain?

Don't protect it too much, for it is your mirror; that mirror, if it breaks, is dearer than the gaze of the mirror-maker.
Don't keep it protected so much, for it is your mirror. That mirror, if it breaks, is dearer than the gaze of the mirror-maker.
6
Do not keep this mirror so carefully, do not save it from breaking,
For in the eyes of the maker, the broken mirror is the most precious thing.
Do not keep this mirror so carefully, and do not save it from breaking, because in the eyes of the maker, the broken mirror is the most precious thing.

The breath of the musk and the thread of the candle said that the effect of the ancient one is neither in your tale of burning nor in my tale of the flowing stream.
The breath of the musk and the thread of the candle said that the effect of the ancient one is neither in your tale of burning nor in my tale of the flowing stream.

When the moth was circling the flame, it said,
'That old fervor is neither in your tale of burning nor in my story of melting.'
When the moth was circling the flame, it said, 'That old fervor is neither in your tale of burning nor in my story of melting.'

Where, in any place, did I find this place, if I found it, it was found in your favor-filled speech, for my sinful, flawed deeds.
Where, in any place, did I find this place? If I found it, it was found in your favor-filled speech, for my sinful, flawed deeds.

In this world, I found no refuge anywhere, and even if I found it, where did I find it?
Only in your divine mercy did I find the support for the sins that destroyed my home.
In this world, I found no refuge anywhere, and even if I found it, where did I find it? Only in your divine mercy did I find the support for the sins that destroyed my home.

Neither were the summers in love, nor were the coquettishness in beauty,
Nor were they agonizing in Ghaznavi, nor is it the intoxication of Ayaz's tresses.
Neither were the summers in love, nor were there coquettishness in beauty; neither was it agony in Ghaznavi, nor is it the intoxication of Ayaz's tresses.
12
Now that warmth in love is gone, nor the shine of beauty as before; now that yearning in Ghaznavi is absent, nor the magic in Ayaz's tresses as before.
Now the warmth in love is gone, nor is there the shine of beauty as before; now the yearning in Ghaznavi is absent, nor the magic in Ayaz's tresses as before.

If I ever became a decorated crown, a song would emerge from the earth's floor; but your heart, beloved, is already familiar to me, what will you find in prayer?
If I were ever a decorated crown, a song would emerge from the earth's floor; but your heart, beloved, is already familiar to me, what will you find in prayer?

When I bowed my head for prostration, a voice began to emanate from the earth. 'Your heart is only familiar with the love of idols; what will you gain from namaz (prayer)?'
When I bowed my head for prostration, a voice began to emanate from the earth, saying, 'Your heart is only familiar with the love of idols; what will you gain from namaz (prayer)?'
