1. दिल ही तो है न संग-ओ-ख़िश्त दर्द से भर न आए क्यूँ रोएँगे हम हज़ार बार कोई हमें सताए क्यूँ

   معنی: It's but a heart, not stone or brick; why shouldn't it be filled with pain? We'll weep a thousand times; why should anyone torment us again?

2. दैर नहीं हरम नहीं दर नहीं आस्ताँ नहीं बैठे हैं रहगुज़र पे हम ग़ैर हमें उठाए क्यूँ

   معنی: No temple, no Kaaba, no door, no threshold to claim, We sit by the roadside; why would a stranger lift our frame?

3. जब वो जमाल-ए-दिल-फ़रोज़ सूरत-ए-मेहर-ए-नीमरोज़ आप ही हो नज़ारा-सोज़ पर्दे में मुँह छुपाए क्यूँ

   معنی: When that heart-kindling beauty, like the noonday sun's bright grace,Is itself a scorching sight, why hide its face in a veiled embrace?

4. दश्ना-ए-ग़म्ज़ा जाँ-सिताँ नावक-ए-नाज़ बे-पनाह तेरा ही अक्स-ए-रुख़ सही सामने तेरे आए क्यूँ

   معنی: A glance's dagger, soul-snatching; a charming arrow, inescapable.Why should even your face's own reflection, though truly yours, dare to stand before you?

5. क़ैद-ए-हयात ओ बंद-ए-ग़म अस्ल में दोनों एक हैं मौत से पहले आदमी ग़म से नजात पाए क्यूँ

   معنی: Life's captivity, sorrow's bonds, in essence, are the same;Why should man find freedom from grief before death stakes its claim?

6. हुस्न और उस पे हुस्न-ए-ज़न रह गई बुल-हवस की शर्म अपने पे ए'तिमाद है ग़ैर को आज़माए क्यूँ

   معنی: Beauty, and her own grace, shamed the desirous eye.Such is my trust in self, why should I try another?

7. वाँ वो ग़ुरूर-ए-इज्ज़-ओ-नाज़ याँ ये हिजाब-ए-पास-ए-वज़अ राह में हम मिलें कहाँ बज़्म में वो बुलाए क्यूँ

   معنی: There, that pride of humble coquetry, here, this veil of self-respect; Where can we meet on the road? Why would they invite me to their assembly?

8. हाँ वो नहीं ख़ुदा-परस्त जाओ वो बेवफ़ा सही जिस को हो दीन ओ दिल अज़ीज़ उस की गली में जाए क्यूँ

   معنی: Yes, he's no devotee, go, let him be faithless, so be it;But one who holds faith and heart dear, why should he seek out his street?

9. 'ग़ालिब'-ए-ख़स्ता के बग़ैर कौन से काम बंद हैं रोइए ज़ार ज़ार क्या कीजिए हाए हाए क्यूँ

   معنی: What work is ever halted without this ailing Ghalib? Why weep so bitterly? Why cry 'alas, alas'?
