1. दिल-ए-नादाँ तुझे हुआ क्या है आख़िर इस दर्द की दवा क्या है

   अर्थ: Oh naive heart, what has befallen you?What, after all, is the remedy for this pain?

2. हम हैं मुश्ताक़ और वो बे-ज़ार या इलाही ये माजरा क्या है

   अर्थ: I am filled with longing, while they are full of disdain,Oh God, what is this strange affair, this inexplicable pain?

3. मैं भी मुँह में ज़बान रखता हूँ काश पूछो कि मुद्दआ' क्या है

   अर्थ: I too possess a tongue within my mouth;If only you'd ask what my true purpose is.

4. जब कि तुझ बिन नहीं कोई मौजूद फिर ये हंगामा ऐ ख़ुदा क्या है

   अर्थ: When naught exists save You, present and profound,What then is this commotion, O God, all around?

5. ये परी-चेहरा लोग कैसे हैं ग़म्ज़ा ओ इश्वा ओ अदा क्या है

   अर्थ: These fairy-faced people, what are they like?What are their coquetry, charm, and grace?

6. शिकन-ए-ज़ुल्फ़-ए-अंबरीं क्यूँ है निगह-ए-चश्म-ए-सुरमा सा क्या है

   अर्थ: Why is there a curl in those amber-scented locks?What is the nature of the kohl-darkened eye's gaze?

7. सब्ज़ा ओ गुल कहाँ से आए हैं अब्र क्या चीज़ है हवा क्या है

   अर्थ: Whence came the verdure and the rose?What is a cloud, and what the breeze?

8. हम को उन से वफ़ा की है उम्मीद जो नहीं जानते वफ़ा क्या है

   अर्थ: From them we hope for fidelity, who know not what fidelity is.

9. हाँ भला कर तिरा भला होगा और दरवेश की सदा क्या है

   अर्थ: Do good deeds, and good will come your way, What else can a dervish say?

10. जान तुम पर निसार करता हूँ मैं नहीं जानता दुआ क्या है

    अर्थ: My life for you I willingly lay down,What prayer is, to me remains unknown.

11. मैं ने माना कि कुछ नहीं 'ग़ालिब' मुफ़्त हाथ आए तो बुरा क्या है

    अर्थ: I admit, Ghalib is nothing, but if he comes for free, what's bad in that?
