Kabir 71-80

Kabir· Ghazal· 10 shers

Kabir's verses emphasize that true devotion requires detachment from worldly ties, comparing a devotee's profound love for God's name to fundamental human and natural affections. He also conveys the difficulty of finding genuine solace for the heart's wounds in a self-serving world, suggesting that one's true nature is ultimately revealed through their words and deeds.

जब मैं था तब गुरु नहीं , अब गुरु हैं मैं नाय। प्रेम गली अति साँकरी , ता मे दो न समाय॥ 82॥
When I was, there was no Guru; now that there is a Guru, I am a stranger. The path of love is too narrow; neither can two reside in it.
When I existed, there was no Guru; now that the Guru exists, I am a stranger. The path of love is very narrow; two cannot reside in it. This couplet suggests that the self (ego) was present when the Guru was absent, but the Guru's presence has made the self alien or unfamiliar. The path of love is too restricted to accommodate two entities.
